Our Story

Our Story Image

We are Rocky and Laura Strand and we have been married for 13 ½ years and have two sons, Peyton, age 11, and Ian, age 8.  We enjoy camping, playing board games or watching a good game of football or baseball.  We live in Jackson, Missouri, where Rocky is a general contractor and real estate agent and Laura works part time as a Physical Therapist Assistant at the local hospital.  We are Youth Ministers at our church and are involved in other areas as well.  We are adopting a little girl from Thailand.

What led us to adoption is really Laura’s story to tell.  Here is a portion of that from her point of view:  My stepfather adopted me when I was two.  Not once did I feel any different than any of my half brothers and sisters.  At the age of eight my parents took the legal steps necessary for my stepfather to officially adopt me.  One of the amazing facts about adoption is now that I am legally his daughter; even my birth certificate bears his name.  My step-father became my daddy and has loved and provided for me, and filled the gap my biological father chose not to fill.  I have always had a passion for children and worked closely with the children and youth departments at my church.  About three years ago I watched a special about homeless children around the world.  My husband and I began talking then about how blessed we were, not rich by the world’s standards, but blessed with family and love.  I asked him if he thought he could love an adopted child as much as the two sons God had given to us.  He immediately replied yes.  Months (and a few years) went by and we talked about adoption frequently, and expressed our desire to others but never felt it was the right time and were just a bit worried about the expenses and other parts involved. In August 2011, a friend connected me with a family who just returned from Ethiopia with their daughter.  I talked with the mother for an hour and a half.  She led me to our current agency, and after prayer and discussion with my husband we took a step of faith and filled out the first application.  And God has just continued to open doors confirming that now is the time.  It all feels like a dream and I just can’t wait to hold our daughter in my arms.

The largest obstacle has always been the expense of adoption. We knew from the beginning that we could not do this without God providing in some way. God has already blessed us in so many ways, and every time we have needed funds they have been there.  Our next big hurdle is the country fee of close to $10,000, we will need to pay once we are matched with our daughter.  Thank you for supporting us on this journey.

 May God Bless You,

The Strand’s
